Recycling Reminder

We appreciate everyone's efforts to recycle and do their part to reduce waste. However, it’s important to note that Mecklenburg County does not accept all items marked with the recycle symbol.

Contrary to common belief, the County does not follow the plastic numbering system, as many products are incorrectly labeled. To avoid contamination and ensure our recycling efforts are effective, please refer to the official list of acceptable items below.

Accepted Items

• Plastic bottles with necks (like soda and water bottles)
• Aluminum cans and steel (tin) cans
• Glass bottles and jars (clear, brown, green)
• Cardboard and paperboard (flattened)
• Paper products: newspapers, magazines, office paper, and junk mail
• Cartons (milk, juice, etc.)

Not Accepted

• Plastic bags or film
• Styrofoam
• Takeout containers and plastic clamshells
• Tanglers (hoses, cords, wires)
• Non-bottle plastics (toys, hangers, tubs)
• Food waste or greasy pizza boxes
